Support for Screenwriters

Talks are slated to continue on the ongoing screenwriters strike the Monday after Thanksgiving (wga.org). The hot button issues such as increased residuals on DVD and other electronic media are worth millions of dollars to the studios, so a resolution to this strike in unlikely to be cheap or easy.  The writers have received a good deal of support from other unions such as SAG and even the teamsters have weighed in on the issue on the writer’s behalf. The public on the other hand seems disinterested and perhaps annoyed by the ongoing struggle. Continue reading ‘Support for Screenwriters’

No Great Women Artists? – Focus on Composers

By Jeanette McDonough

For centuries the role of women in the arts has been debated. One of the key issues of discussion has often been the idea that women in general are not capable of producing masterworks of art and music. A viewpoint that has been fostered by many because women haven’t been represented equally in terms the sheer volume of work produced when compared to their male counterparts.  The argument has been supported frequently by citing the prolific body of work available from gifted male composers. Women, or men for that matter, who’d like to argue that women are as capable of producing great works of music are often stymied because they themselves haven’t been exposed to many works by women composers. Web Careers for Writers 2 Paper Mills

This morning over coffee, the subject of paper-mills came up. I’ve heard both sides of the argument and for the most part, I’ve felt that writing for paper-mills was a decision that writers would have to make on their own. Today however, I realized that this issue isn’t an issue for fence-setting.  Continue reading ‘Web Careers for Writers 2 Paper Mills’

Halloween Flash Fiction 2 At the Brother’s Table

By Shawnee Horton

The stove was finally hot enough to cook dinner on. Rachael navigated around the crude kitchen getting everything she needed, wishing for a refrigerator and microwave. The old cook-stove looked tired; its stove pipe was cock-eyed and blackened with soot. Everything was always covered with soot, dark as pitch and impossible to clean. Rachael wiped her hands on her apron, leaving a black streak, sticky in stifling heat. Charles and Ivan were outside chopping wood.  Andrew was cleaning his rifle. They’d all want their dinner soon, having little patience for waiting. When she married Charles she didn’t realize that she’d be taking care of his brothers too, but that’s exactly what had happened.   Continue reading ‘Halloween Flash Fiction 2 At the Brother’s Table’

Free Speech Debate Rages on College Campuses

The student Editor-in-chief at Fort Collins, Colorado’s CSU, is in big trouble. The offense that has sparked a nationwide debate on the limitations of free speech was an editorial posted in The Rocky Mountain Collegian. The editorial was a 4 word sentence that simply said “Taser This..F_ _ _ _ Bush. “  The fallout from the editorial written by J. David McSwain was swift. Reports were circulated by the release of an alleged memo that said advertisers were pulling their ads. Further, it was suggested by that memo that the student publication lost $30,000 in ad revenues that resulted in wage cuts for student staff.
